Ginga means galaxy
The gin part means silver and the ga means river (silver river = milky way)

the G is formed from the top of the S and the U. But the G symbol is for Team Galactic, there is no reference to galar because there is no galar starter which OP was refering too

No, it’s the first character from the Japanese word for galaxy. ‘Gin’ which means silver, and ‘ga’ which means river.
It’s the Japanese equivalent of Team Galactic’s logo being a stylised ‘G’.

They'd probably use their scribbledygook instead if that were the case. Even then, the "U" is questionable.

Yeah, but i don't think they know they are working for the bad guys. I think the professor who gave them the starters is going to be the team leader or at least one of the bad guys, since they are working for him and he is probably the one who give them the uniforms.

It could be something like a coat of arms signifying what part of the region they're from. The symbol worn by the people that completed the region's first Pokedex would definitely have notable cultural significance.

Fun fact this is made even more likely because the Cyrus that Giovanni recruited to Rainbow Rocket won and recreated his world. Who is to say this world is truly in the past and not just Cyrus's world?
