the sinnoh movies I didnt watch all of, as I've always been a poorfag and I stopped watching the anime during the DP arc because the show went to exclusively cartoon network at this time, and then saturday morning cartoons as a whole ended. I did watch darkrai, it was okay. I also watched arceus and thought his voice was just so horrible and I didnt think the movies lived up to sinnoh's grandiose mythos.
What's interesting to me is what the movies have influenced. they seem to have had a great affect on smash bros for example, look at mewtwo based on movie1 and pichu based on the pichu bros, and then lucario based on his movie. simply amazing.
Anyway I think what happened is overtime as the franchise becomes so long lived the anime's canon becomes less important and the games become more story driven as this is happening. plus, the anime was shudo's vision, and he made a lot of strange decisions so when people ape him its derivative and has no impact and when people go the other way it clashes with what he built up. the anime feels less impactful and legendaries themselves also have this problem, so its no wonder the movies have diminishing returns. the early movies & legends were the pioneers and stood alone, during pokemania. there werent so many that people have a backlog and each felt more special. its also that as any series gets past like a decade the original creators start to leave or else get jaded or creatively bankrupt and its left to be kept by fans which most of the time can be felt. its fanfiction, corporate fanfiction and it feels ingenuine. the first 4 movies had shudo's full investment and care put in, and the rest might ape him but dont exactly go for the heartstrings or even try to feel important. I guess they're okay as a series, but the first few felt like actual important movies since there already is a series.
