DLC instead of a 3rd version was a good decision.
Pokémon started going to shit in Gen 6.
DLC was the first time they made a good decision in years, and this recent presentation confirms things are definitely on the upswing for the series.

BW are the soft reboot of the series, with a large regional dex but 99% only new mons. BW2 are a look at that same region but without the strict new mon only dex, a blending of all 5 gens together the way every game up to BW traditionally was. Also literally THE most story-focused generation in the whole franchise with 2 incredibly distinct, expansive stories
What youre looking for is SM/USUM, where USUM was LITERALLY just a worse version of SM's story with a better/harder game underneath.
