I replayed diamond last week, and beat every single trainer in every optional area, and grinded against wild mons in victory road and the ironworks place outside of canalave. My team was still only level 45 by the elite four, with one level 50. Cynthia's team is in the 62-66 range. If you want to use more than 6 mons you can forget it, unless you want to grind with the VS seeker which really kills the flow of the game.
