Even if you ignore the tiers and bans, they still matter because they determine what gets used and how.
For example, if you look at Smogon, it would seem like Toxapex is really good and you'd need to bring a dedicated counter, but it's total garbage in the actual game where Dynamax is allowed and offensive threats aren't banned on sight.
