>>46426032Open world on it's own isn't automatically bad, it's just incredibly difficult to do well, and trying to force it on games it isn't suited for usually ends badly. Open world needs 2 things to be truly right, the first is the world itself has to been large, fluid, and entrancing. Genshin managed to do this pretty well. The map is massive and offers a ton of exploration with interesting environments and things to stumble upon. The resin and gacha is trash, but the first few hours of just wandering around in that game is the most fun I've had in awhile.
The second part is where genshin fails, and that is density. An open world has to match the size of it's map with the size of it's content. Running over a vast open field quickly becomes a chore if there's nothing but a handful of 5 types of generic mooks in it.
This is why everyone wants to see pokemon go open world, because it's one of the few franchises who has the content to match. There's over 1000 pokemon all with unique personalities and traits that could be scattered across the world. Pokemon which people would eagerly search high and low for, exploring every nook and cranny for hours to find that rare member of their team. It's the very reason that trash Pokemon Go blew up. It satisfied that primal urge of adventure. To explore the highest peaks and the deepest oceans in search of the many pokemon that inhabit them. It's one of the few franchises that could truly pull it off, and they have the money to do it. I'm confident if nintendo ever managed to pry the IP out of gamefreaks cold dead hands and develop in house we could potentially see one of the best games in our lifetime.
