Why the FUCK weren't Mega a permanent thing? Was it feedback based, or planned from the start as a gimmick? Because it didn't feel like a gimmick at all, it was a core mechanic being expanded.

Because it would get repetitive and you can tell GF as getting a headache deciding which mons to give megas. Dynamax gives the same benefits regardless of mons making a better overal mechanic.

Then why not make Dynamax a universal/permanent mechanic instead of Megas?
Why the sudden change to obligatory regional gimmicks each gen starting with Gen 7? Why not just focus on one instead of dangling megas like a carrot over our heads similar to walking/riding with Pokemon?

Well after gen 4 there wasn't really anything left to polish beyond balancing stuff. Which GF was doing anyway. The P/S split perfected the battle system itself. Any other changes would be cosmetic, or gimmicky like Megas.

I think they were planned to be temporary.
They apparently didn't give megas to new mons because they didn't want to design them around their megas and make them incomplete without them.
But why would that matter if megas were permanent? That's why I think they always intended to get rid of them at some point or another.
And as for gigantamaxes, GF is now willing to cull mons, so once dynamax is thrown in the gimmick bin, mons who feel incomplete without their gmax forms will be permanently dexited.

The replacement for Megas wasn't Dynamax, not really. The replacement was regional variants. The big motivation behind Megas was to drum up new interest for old designs, which Megas quickly lost interest in in exchange for hyping up the same fan favorites as always. Gigantamax is only the replacement for Megas in that it's a way to make bosses a little more unique and unfair (like Z-Moves/Totem minions had), but then X/Y barely used them and refused to give them to new Pokemon, so they were terrible on that front and needed a replacement.

Yes I do. In-game it’s terribly balanced because it can be spammed at no cost in any Trainer battle. Competitively it’s terribly balanced because Metagross, Lucario, Blaziken, and Gengar share the same resource as Audino, Abomasnow, Banette, and Ampharos and it results in every player shoving the same 1-3 Pokemon on their team to even have a chance at winning.

It does literally nothing but make the game worse.

The problem with Dynamax is that the basic version of Max Moves for each type is so good that 9 out of 10 gigantamax forms are flat out worse than just using the regular mon dynamaxed, completely removing the appeal of raiding for the gigantamon

They were going to keep megas as a permanent thing but the entire franchise went sideways mid way through gen7s development, because the mantra became "holy shit yokai watch is raping us in japan, quick drop everything we are doing and copy it as much as possible"

GF always makes changes that seem like they would be major lasting updates to the core balance of the game, and then view them as 1-off gimmicks to be discarded 1 gen later because the kids need a new shiny pair of keys to get their attention.
I'm sure someone has compiled a design document of all the major and minor features in each gen that if combined would be the "ultimate" Pokemon game. It will never happen by the devs own hands though.

Z Move dances were straight up ripped off Yokai summoning dances from the Yokai Watch anime. Sun and Moon anime becoming a SoL with wacky meme faces was also certainly due to Yokai Watch raping the absolute fuck out of Pokemon in Japan during the ORAS era.

There is also some lesser stuff like a talking ghost companion (Rotom Dex) following the MC and a fire cat starter.

Yeah no. Megas are actually tailor made for specific pokemon and can allow for specific strategies to be built around them like Mega Swampert on rain teams. It can also patch up weakness the base form might have had.
They also (usually) have interesting visual designs. They feel like a temporary burst of power.
Dynamax on the other hand is just a stat increase and moveswap, sure you can use it with more pokemon, but as a result it makes it feel the same regardless of what you use it on.
It also heavily favors bulky attackers like Gyarados or Togekiss due to the way the stats work.
Of course, the worst part is the visuals: they just get bigger.

Couple that with the fact that, due to their power, using a mega was pretty much required, it greatly limited potential team compositions. I like the idea of Megas, but I don't like their distribution. There should have been hundreds of Megas. Dynamax is pretty much just Megas but better, anyways. You get to choose which Pokemon is your mega based on how the match is going, instead of having to preplan it, and any Pokemon can Dynamax.

Everyone. Everyone wants that. GMax Wildfire deals 1/6th of the opponent's health each turn for four turns. This means it does 8/24's of the enemy team's health (assuming there is a non fire type out to take the hit and not get KO'd from it). Being able to press one button and take out 1/3rd of the enemy team is incredibly powerful over "set up a weather that could end up being overwritten LATER THIS TURN."

Dynamax is a cheap sell out because "balancing is too hard and designing gud mega forms takes time. Let's just make them bigger"
