In each generation of Pokemon games one is more popular and cooler than the other. Why was Silver the cool version over Gold?

Lugia was featured in the anime more. That’s why I got Silver over Gold as a kid at least, Lugia was the only one I actually recognized because of the movie.

I'm glad I stopped at moon. My choices were red, yellow, leaf green, silver, crystal, heart gold, ruby, emerald, omega ruby, diamond, platinum, black 1, white 2 and Y.

My guess for the 'first' version of each game usually selling more copies is that in game stores they simply display them in order and most normies will probably grab the first version they see without bothering to look up the minor differences between both versions beforehand (notable exception being Silver as explained above)

Case in point: I also wanted silver for my birthday as a kid because I saw the Lugia movie and thought it was the shit, but my boomer dad just picked the first pokemon game he saw on the shelf (I presume) and I didn't want to sound like a spoiled brat so I didn't complain.

No X sold better. Nintendo actually released specific version data for those two at some point and it wasn't a slaughter but X outsold Y by around a hundred thousand copies.

I've always gone with the "top-billed" version ever since I was a kid. Even Gold, because I legitimately thought Ho-Oh looked cooler, and I got it before the movie came out. Somehow some distant relative gifted me Silver for Christmas that year, though. Honestly, I think the legendaries for the other half of games all look pretty flaccid.
