Most Pokemon games are maybe 10 hours at the most; playing through, collecting badges and beating the gym leaders. Anything extra is more or less up to the player (in the form of contest, battle frontier, rebattling the gym leaders/E4, etc). Even actually capturing every Pokemon is a tertiary task compared to simply beating the game.
With Raid Battles you literally have endless content. Gamefreak can continue to release or otherwise drip feed new Pokemon, new forms, special abilities or whatever through them. By creating a low bar multiplayer mode, literally anyone can participate and you don't need competitively trained Pokemon to do so. (Which hampered a lot of previous games' online interactions)
I think if they can figure out what do with the actual capturing Pokemon mechanic (outside of capturing just to finish the dex/for your own personal collection) something like the Pokepelago or the PokeTasks is interesting. Use the Pokemon in the boxes to do things for you (send them out on an adventure, bring you back rewards and they gain exp, etc)
