First time was Soul Silver as my second team member. Did decently well until it evolved. Golbat was pretty great. Crobat did ok but fell off around the league IMO.

Golbat is an average pokemon. Confuse Ray, Air Cutter/Wing Attack, and Sludge Bomb are decent options for gen 2-3. Crobat adds good bulk so evolve as soon as possible.
