SwSh requires a lot of investment in the characters for you to care about what they're saying. Sonia bothering you about the Darkest Day, which is honestly very uninteresting, was pretty annoying.

I’m surprised people are saying the SWSH story is engaging. I actually like the games a lot but thought the story was very basic and rushed compared to SM. Better than XY at least. There were lots of characters but less “feels” compared to Alola.

For me, it's XY. Yes, Alola has a lot of loredumping, but it's actually relevant to the story. Generic fat kid talking about how dancing is super cool and generic nerdy kid talking about the pokedex does nothing to advance the story.
