New to Pokemon. Why is the experience curve so shit in HGSS? I've done every trainer battle in Johto and I never ran from wild Pokemon encounters. Why do I get absolutely shitstomped at the Elite Four?

Usually it's either Bruno's Machamp or Karen's Houndoom. I managed to get to Lance twice but he obliterates me.

What's wrong with my team?

Because it was shit in GSC and Gamefreak didn't bother fixing it. Better get grinding. Victory road is the best place before the first go around on the e4, then don't make the same mistake I did and beat Blue before you grind some more on the elite four, after you beat Blue they get a good chunk stronger and the only decent place to grind at that point is Mt. Silver.

Do you still have the TM for Sunny Day? That would be a big help for Typhlosion. It'll be in the Radio Tower, you get it from talking to one of the ladies there after beating Team Rocket. If you teach it that move and Solarbeam (another TM, you can buy it from the department store in Goldenrod), you'll get a decent grass move that doesn't have to spend a turn charging, on top of the boost to fire attacks from Sunny Day. You can get rid of Aerial Ace and Lava Plume for them.

Raise Pidgeot's level just a bit more so it can learn Roost. Tailwind would also be good, but that requires grinding to level 50 so I don't blame you if you don't feel like it.

Stick to using Thunder/Discharge with Ampharos, T-Punch isn't very good for it. You can teach it Light Screen via a TM from Goldenrod's department store (or raise it to level 51 but ain't a nigga got time for that). That should be a big help against Houndoom.

Gengar shouldn't be using physical attacks, stick to any special attacks you can teach it, most notably Focus Blast (once more from the Goldenrod TM shop) and I guess Thunder if you've got the money for it.

Nidoqueen is a fantastic Pokemon, you really ought to consider teaching it better moves and grinding some with it.

There's a Heart Scale hidden on route 32, you can teach one move, either Thunder Wave for Ampharos or Rollour for Typhlosion ( it's great against Lance's Charizard and Aerodacytl).
If you want to grind, train Octillery. It's easy to level up in the cave with all the groud pokemon.
If you want to replace Nidoqueen, you can catch either Donphan or Ursaring in the cave, teach it Earthquake.

I play HGSS and GSC with a cycling team of 7 and I get everything to 49 for the e4

Impossible.
Trainers are low level in those games, you don't get enough exp to have a team of level 49 for the pokemon league without grinding.

From Azalea Town you can get Charcoal to give Typhlosion to boost the power of Fire Moves. Machamp is a bit of an issue for your team because Pidgeot is weak to Rock Slide. If Gengar still has Hypnosis you can level him up to 39 and get Dream Eater (Psychic type move) which can beat Machamp, replace Bite with that because Gengar has a bad physical attack stat. If Gengar doesn't have Hypnosis relearn it from the move reminder at Blackthorn, you need heart scales which you can find from smashing rocks or the Pokeathlon. For Karen I guess you can get a Mystic Water from Cherrygrove, give it Octillery and hope for the best. As for Lance, his team is heavily weak to Ice so I would give Octillery Ice beam (have to get from playing voltorb flip at the game corner) or Blizzard (less reliable).

It comes from zoomers making shitmon choices. Ghost is one of the worst in-game team to use as it's only helpful twice, unless you teach Gengar Psychic and Tbolt for coverage along with Shadow Ball and Hypnosis.

With the exception of a starter, its so much better to just build a team of mons that evolve early so you build a strong team quickly. It is not worth the effort of having Pidgeot when you can get Spearow so early (and even get one for free that gets bonus exp on Goldenrod.)

Also think about how many faggots want a dwagonite in their Johto playthroughs because you get Dratini so early. What good does it do you when its really only helpful vs Claire before becoming a Dragonite? And it likely won't be one until Kanto gyms.

Typhlosion, Ampharos, Starmie, Fearow, Heracross. The sixth can be something like Nidoking, Golem, of whatever you can get that provides additional coverage. It's not difficult to build a good Johto team. You just can't rely on too many high evolution mons

yeah but your levels will be high enough you can play around that. a good type match-up means nothing if you're 10 levels below the other pokemon because it'll still just tank through your shit and not-very-effective your face down, and now you have 5 other shit pokemons that are under its level that you have to beat it with.

You don't have to play around anything when you're overleveled, this is why new Exp. Share sucks. People seriously grind for hours in GSC and then complain that the Elite Four is too easy and boring with a Level 60 Lugia/Ho-Oh/Suicune.

Best way to grind is to spend all your money on items so you won't lose it when you black out, then challenge the E4 over and over and just let yourself lose to them until you eventually don't.
Also make sure you have the exp. share just in case you missed it.

The franchise was supposed to end with Johto. Battling red is supposed to be the most difficult thing you're doing and it shouldn't be held as something related to the level curve/story. You're supposed to grind hard to go beat him. It's the whole point of it.

??? Red's team is from lvl 74 to 81 and with Pokégear rematches you get evolved Pokémon to grind on level 65+. Do you want them to hand you rare candies too? People used to spend 200+ hours back in the day playing these and exploring, are set with mind on that. Grabbing your console, grinding a little, going to face the trainer, losing but leveling up your Pokémon a little on battle and trying again.

The level curve isn't that bad at all for the E-4...they are all weaker than their original versions by a few levels.
The disappointment only really shows itself when you want to battle red or start a fresh team from eggs and realize across both fucking maps most mons are below lvl 50.

No no no dont blame the game dude. First of all, the elite four is supposed to be hard. Second your levels are fine except nidoqueen and maybe gengar. Your problem is your shitty movesets and oh yea, your OCTILLERY. lol even if you get to lance, which shouldnt be a problem, octillery will get outsped and one shot by all three of lances dragonites and probably aerodactyl too before it can get off an ice beam. Ditch the shitty octopus unless you want to grind it to like level 55 so it can outspeed or tank a hit or two. Remember that red gyarados? Did you catch it? If so ditch that hm slave and train the gyarados in victory road to level 44. If I remember correctly thats when it learns Dragon dance. Give it waterfall/ice fang/dd/whatever and set up on lances gyara and sweep. Your movesets on your other mons are shit too. Give typhlosion focus blast and flamethrower and hyper beam as a last ditch nuke to hit lances dragons with something they dont resist.
Ampharos is good with just discharge and fucus blast. Gengar is good with just shadow ball and focus blast, maybe sludge bomb for more power on neutral hits. Pidgeot sucks and probably wont be able to ohko any of brunos mons so use the gyarados I mentioned. If you want to keep octillery more power to you. It would be a good last ditch for some of the e4 minus the champion to spam surf. idk what else to tell you man. But it's not just the experience curve.

Not OP but should I go for Lapras or Gyarados for handling Clair/Lance?

I've been mostly using Quagsire for my go-to water type, but I figured I'd probably need something more dedicated for those two.

Running Typhlosion, Noctowl, Ampharos, Quagsire, Kadabra (will be Alakazam later) with 6th slot as HM slave/wildcard slot r/n
