They were, but the idea was scrapped. Maybe, because they didn't want to make one gender canon over another, since these characters are suppose to be self-inserts.

They were planned but I imagine they didn't want to make you fight your own team/it was probably difficult to design a good fight vs just giving Red all the guaranteed pokemon from Yellow.
