the exp share + the wild area were some of the few redeeming qualities of Sword/Shield. Made team building so much more easy and fun with barely any grinding

I unironically prefer grinding. It makes having strong pokemon feel like more of an accomplishment and gives you more time to bond with your partner. Also helps pad out game length so you can't blaze through the entire game in an absolutely embarassing twenty hours.

If you like the way that modern exp share works, fine, but at least let people turn it off so they don't have to constantly box their entire team so you don't overlevel.

This. For as much as people like to complain about the lack of difficulty and the exp. share, it makes the game less of a significant time investment for me so I really do just get to relax and enjoy myself, even if plenty of other things about the game aren't good.

Don't get me wrong. I have over five hundred hours on both versions. My shield file has a completed pokedex, nigh infinite amount of money and other resources, a box full of shinies, and every conceivable in-game challenge completed. My sword file has been my restart file, constantly deleting my progress so I can start anew with different team combinations. I don't hate SwSh, but I miss when a pokemon game could last me until the next pokemon game comes out.

The only thing that I actually fucking cannot stand are those bullshit friendship powers that give you an unfair advantage and make losing any battle a virtual impossibility. I cannot stand that they tethered following pokemon to it and forces me to turn it off to maintain even the slightest semblence of challenge in these games.

I just don't want to have to avoid every single wild pokemon encounter in the game and STILL be overleveled for every gym battle. God help you if one of your team members is a traded mon because they'll level at an uncontrollable rate while doing nothing the entire game.

Being able to level your whole team all at once is fine when that's what you want to happen but sometimes you don't.

the new exp share makes it so you can easily have an interchangeable team throughout the game. in S/S i had 10 pokemon that were at good levels that i was switching out by the end.

I did, however, decide one time to do a run where I only used bug pokemon. Which bug pokemon? Literally all of them. Now there was a file where I didn't feel overleveled. Bug pokemon are based.

I liked it in X/Y for leveling a huge number of pokemon but it sucked on repeat playthroughs when I was only using a set team of six.

I like the exp share, I just think there should be options to either turn it off, or limit which pokemon benefit from it.

Most modern rpgs have an item that limits or completely stops a character from gaining xp and I think pokemon should do the same. A held item like an everstone that makes the holding pokemon not gain exp would fix everything in my book.

And that's the thing, people just want options. This game removes too many options, but still remains mediocre despite that. And the fact that these are the most expensive games in the series to date if you take DLC and LG exclusive Pokémon in the mix, and you have the reason people hate these games. People wanted variety and options in both Pokémon roster and mechanics, on top of quality.... we got nether for more money than ever.

I see the benefits in the postgame, but in the main story, it makes raising a team feel pretty meaningless. Like, the whole concept of Magikarp is that you have to put up with its shittiness to be rewarded.

When I have a pokemon I want to actually use it. Not just keep it in my team to sponge until it's usable.

The entirety of the game my team was over leveled. Even when I had 3 team setups to go through, it was an active hassle to keep swapping my teams around just so I wouldn't curb stomp everything. Not to mention it removes the need to actually explore.
Not that there was much to explore. But other than 1 or 2 pokemon I wanted on my team. I never felt the need to level up any of my pokemon or train. Just walk straight through the area. Don't really look for anything or anyone.

the problem with the exp share isn't that it brings all your pokemon up to a reasonable level, it's that it over levels them so everything is too easy. It's impossible to balance because if you lower the exp yield too much then the game is horribly grindy without it on.

I cannot for the life of me understand why they chose not to populate the wild area and dlc areas with trainers.

I can't see this happening unless you suddenly decide at the end of the game that you want to raise up a pokemon that's only obtainable at the beginning route, and even then there are plenty of lv catchup mechanics in place.

This would only make sense if moves themselves had an exp bar. Since you're not training your pokemon to better use those moves, it's just a grind.

Though that aspect makes it easier to justify switching out your team for new Pokemon without grinding.

I think it could be balanced while also not making it a joyless game if they added a hard mode with fixed wild Pokemon levels and for trainers variable level/moveset scaling relative to your progress through the game and the trainer.
