I cannot for the life of me understand the appeal of gba/ds era pokemon graphics. Gen 1 and 2 had SOVL. The current ones don't have as much soul, but they're at least super HD.

sure, other titles have more advanced graphics,
but it's the simplicity and very good choice of colors in gsc which saves it.
I agree they could have made mroe advanced graphics given the time frame (1996-1999) since it's basically a port of red/blue/green to basically the same fucking system
however they also had a lot of maps and a lot of pokemon, i would rather have this with good proper colors than what we saw from the beta / spaceworld with only 4 colors, even if it did use more unique tiles

i feel like if they just expanded on the gba graphics instead of what they did with the ds games, they could have put more soul into it. like a lot of the modded gba games have something to them

Wow what a massive dose of copium. Don't get me wrong. I love Sugimori's illustrations, but pixel graphics are trash no matter how you look at it.

I personally find 1 and 3 unappealing,. Though coincidentally, they're also the only games I brought just to complete the dex of the gens that succeeded them, since I preferred to play the console games while they were out.

GBA and DPPT were pretty bland. Hgss and Gen 5 had really nice overworld visuals, low resolution notwithstanding.

They changed the tileset for red/blue international release, the japanese version looks closer to gsc. I have no idea why they did that and I can't remember if yellow fixed that or not.

In terms of aesthetics, imo

Gen 2 > Gen 5 > Gen 4 (HGSS) > Gen 4 (DPP) > Gen 1 > Gen 3 > Gen 8 > Gen 6 > Gen 7

He didn't do most of the sprite art, actually, at least for the original RG. I dunno who did the Blue sprites, which is what we first got. They're not quite as fucky, but they still have a little bit of jank to them. I wouldn't call that soul, personally, but I don't hate jank.

Yes, it's not as bad as the difference between RS overworld sprites and FRLG overworld sprites, but the Sinnoh games have a slightly washed out look, while HGSS goes for a more complex palette, not to mention the greater detail HGSS has even in comparison to Platinum's improvements.
