why are rock and ground seperate types? why not just make them the same typing?

Agreed. Also bug and dragon shouldn't be types either. That's like having mammal typing and reptile typing

And flying should only be a typing given to pokemon that embody the concept of air/wind, rather than just anything with wings. That's like giving ground typing to anything with legs that walks on land.

They just need to be differantiates more.

Resists them

ROCK is about hard shelled mon or living minerals. GROUND is about creatures adaptes to desert arid environments. So I would also remove the Water weakness of Rock, and perhaps, perhaps the Grass weakness of Ground.
+ a resistance to fire

Yes they could've been grouped as an Earth type but they're different enough to have their own types.

Rock Pokemon are made of rocks. Ground Pokemon exist in or on the ground.

Mainly because it wouldn't make sense for flying to be immune to rock based moves. But they could easily make some earth moves by resisted by flying and some not, so maybe

imo pokemon could really do with consolidating a lot of types.

fold rock/steel/ground into one mineral type
fold fairy/dragon/psychic into one 'mystic' type
flying as a type is changed to wind, with flight as an attribute staying as a passive ability.
