It's the most consistently good first version Game Freak has ever put out, which isn't exactly a high bar to hit but the fixes needed are relatively minor in comparison to other games (glitchy engine, terrible art styles, engine that fucking chugs, balance issues, I could go on). To be fair, DP got most of the balancing stuff right, and they had the time on the DS to get the engine stuff right, so it's not exactly unexpected. On an aesthetic side, I like a lot of what they did, and I really like the soundfont in comparison to DP or XY. It helps the strong compositions to begin with. Aside from a few issues at opposite ends of the game, the Pokemon choices are pretty good (at least better than other 150-ish Pokedexes like RB or DP). Not to mention, it is a relatively smooth experience if you just want to go through the story, but also provides some nice content during and after the game. If you want true nonlinearity, Platinum murdered that unfortunately. Off the top of my head, I'd say Paper Mario's tetxbox system is about all the game really needs. That and the ability to turn EXP scaling on and off in the postgame, it's really great to keep you at a consistently challenging level during the story, and is great for leveling low level Pokemon up in general, but if you want to go to level 100 it's just miserable. Also, the online is dead on a server side, they probably shouldn't have relied on it as much as they did, but that's a problem with every game developer these days, it seems. I'm shocked SS has a LAN mode, for example, but I greatly appreciate it. At least there's a DNS exploit for BW, even if it doesn't bring back the Dream World. I dunno how objective I can be, BW is tied to the early days of /vp/ for me, I'm not sure I can separate that.
