>>46488740There exists a thing called "context".
>GundamThemes: War, mechanization, space
Audience: Young - mid adults
Design: Blocky humanoid tank.
Gundam is not overdesigned in context.
>Kaiju i.e. GojiraThemes: War, mutation, pollution
Audience: Young - mid adults
Design: Animalistic rubber suit.
Kaiju are not overdesigned in context.
>Marvel heroesThemes: Justice, freedom, superpowers
Audience: Children - teens
Design: Skintight colourful suits
Marvel heroes aren't traditionally overdesigned but in the movies their costumes are a bit complex.
>DevilmanThemes: Corruption, violence, justice
Audience: Young adults
Design: Campy but edgy demons
I wouldn't say Devilman himself is overdesigned. You could argue some of the villains are but in context they're meant to look messed up by comparison. They ARE demons.
>PokémonThemes: Nature, journeys, mythology
Audience: Children
Design: Brightly coloured stylized monsters that metaphorically fit in your pocket
Some are overdesigned, some aren't. Majority aren't.
>DigimonThemes: Technology, destiny, friendship
Audience: Young teens
Design: Heavily stylized high contrast cyber beasts
They are overdesigned by...well, by design.
