I once almost got a shot of a monarch butterfly resting on the flower of some mexican butterfly weed (pic related) but the wind didn't let me focus before it flew away. Speaking of wind, I once got very close to a group of migrating swallows because they were flying against the wind but I sadly had no battery left to take a picture.
