Not anything complex, but avoiding optional battles not only leaves you underleveled, but it also becomes an entertaining stealth game.

Plan your team before a playthrough and use mostly or all weak and gimmick mons. Pic related is my most recent ORAS run where I did that, with Swampert for HMs and some battles. It can be suprisingly tough depending on the game and team.

only using defensive mons and restricting yourself to only one attacking move on each one is legit the most fulfilling way you can play these games

The game completely changes from "BRRRR PRESS SUPER EFFECTIVE MOVE TO WIN" to an actually strategic experience

i legit recommend this to everyone

a mono letter run, like for example you can only use pokemon starting with the letter V or something. Or a word run, where you pick a 6 letter word that includes each member of your team's starting letter.

monotype are also really fun especially in some certain romhacks or fangames

Monotype/monocolor/monoegg group/etc.
0 exp (patch the game so you don't earn experience)
Mandatory battles only
0 EV run (patch game so you don't earn EVs)
No learning new moves run (can only use the first four moves a Pokemon has when you get it and can't teach it anything else, only exception is HMs)
Shadow Pokemon only run in Gale of Darkness/Colosseum
No healing/Pokecenter run
Catchless run

Combine any of these with level caps, itemless, and set mode for a better experience

Super type run.
Can't use 2 pokemon of the same type
Can't have more than 1 move of any specific type on your pokemon. Only items allowed are held items that boost the pokemons type.
