I don’t know if it was intentional design, but pokemon cards are surprisingly resilient to the irresponsible handling by children. They still get scuffed, and I remember original foil was almost impossible not to scratch, but I have quite a few cards I treated the same way that I expected to look a lot worse than they do

Yea this was how it was at my school too. I don’t think anyone ever stole any cards, they just didn’t want them to be at school because they were a distraction. It didn’t matter though, people brought them regardless and just went to the far corner of the playground to trade.

at my school we had a marble bazar where kids with cards would put them up against the wall, the kids with marbles would try to hit the cards with them. If you hit you got the card, if you missed you lost the marble

I found my cards a few months ago, they all have a notable rubberband mark in the center. Shame cause there are some foils in there

I remember that justification as well. We all know it had nothing to do with gambling, it’s just the pokemon hype was so huge having classrooms full of kids with their cards out caused lots of distractions and fights
