Yeah.
You could probably set up something similar to Cycling Road with a warp pad at the bottom that sends the player back up to the top. I believe that advances the step counter.

Also, regarding tutorials, in my own projects for not pokemon games, I tend to go for silent tutorials basically. Things that lend themselves to common sense "do this." For example, if a Pokemon game was to tutorialize catching a pokemon. I would do the wally route, of not having to watch an NPC do it, but getting given a pokemon by say... the gym leader of your town, and you have to challenge and capture your starter as a rite of passage to earning your trainer license. Make the only move the pokemon has false swipe, and the catch rate 100% to prevent lock out issues.

That way you the catching tutorial, without literally giving a catching tutorial, but feels professional like it could have been in a real game.

this is a great topic for discussion so i'm bringing it here too
i think a lot of fan games stick way too hard to the official formula. square starting town with 3/4 houses, 10 year old goes to the professor to get their fist mon and goes on a journey to stop the bad guy team following the same structure and progression as the official games. the problem with that is they rarely have the quality of writing and plot design that the real games do (and i'm not saying the real games do it well) so it comes across as a shallow repetitive version of something that is already shallow and repetitive. especially without fakemon, a fan region following the same formula with the same mons feels very pointless.

a lot of fan games die in the water because they have this epic grand idea and then put out a huge casting list for designers, spriters, mappers, musicians, coders, and then act surprised when talented people aren't leaping at the chance to make their game for them. they try to frame it like a fun communal project but really it's just expecting people to do all the work, for free, when people with talent are already working on their own projects and aren't sitting twiddling their thumbs waiting for a genius idea guy to set them all into motion. what do you think is the minimum work done that a project needs as a baseline to attract other people to want to work on it on their own?

Like... I played Soverign in the Sky recently, and I broke down laughing when I realized it was basically just Golden Sun but pretending to be pokemon, and like... while that was hilarious before I realized that, I realized I was really enjoying the starting area because it was nice and spaceous, and the characters knew you, there was a school, the fuckin' houses had bathrooms and clearly looked lived in. I think you sit down, and you grind out content. When I started with my project, I was alone, I didn't know how to do anything, but I slowly pulled it all together. As people see your hard work, they'll be interested in helping you out. Do everything you can yourself. Don't put out the call, unless you absolutely need help somewhere.

I don't think sticking to the official formula is very bad. There's plenty that someone can do with a game's mechanics to make a fresh experience without having to touch the typical 8-gym setup. I'd rather have a basic plot than NPCs throwing other NPCs into a volcano. Of course those are two extremes, but you get my point.

I think something to remember is to make characters... characters. Without making them completely become the plot. I think BW hit the balance juuuust right, where each Gym Leader felt like a person, but the plot didn't become what it does in most fan games, which is "Gym Leader/Champion fighting the evil team and you're just standing there."

I like it when the big bad guy seems like an actual threat, Cyrus was the best at that imo, I would have loved it if they took it even further and had him and his admins be strongers, or have some of the gym leaders help out for some sweet multibattles

Here anon. Time and time again I've seen you post and never seem to consider this stuff with your maps.

Red line = "main" path
Blue = optional
Purple = path requires some sort of HM

As it stands there is 0 reason to ever walk into grass on this route. Your grass patches are also horribly large. This is pointless and bad.

The optional paths are pointless, aside from the ones that you DIDN'T add. I'm giving you benefit of the doubt and assuming you plan to put items along them. Otherwise there is no reason for them to be there.

The HM paths (in this case water, exclusively) Also serve no purpose. There are two possibilities here; (A) The player has surf when they first get to this route. In which case they can bypass any trainers which are (hopefully ) on the route's main path, and render the entire route a straight line (which is only slightly worse than this stagnant slithering pattern you chose) or (B) the player doesn't have surf when they first get to this route. In which case, they choose between a slog of a back and forth path, fighting trainers (stepping around them maybe), or going through obscene amounts of grass over way too long an area. This scenario also renders the water useless, because it will never be needed as a shortcut.

Please anon, use this path system and actually think about your routes from a gameplay perspective, from this point forward. Your routes are often awful, but you can learn to make them better.

For comparison, here is hoenn's route 119 with the same thing done to it. Notice I didn't put any paths throughout the lower patch of grass, because (to my memory) they don't REALLY have any different outcome than the path I drew. This is a prime example of how bigger is NOT better, which is something your maps tend to fail to realize. If there is nothing of worth in the large area, there is no reason for it to be so large. Route 119 is the size of a lake with the depth of an ocean. Yours is the size of an ocean with the depth of a pond.

I encourage you to go through your favorite official routes, and do this path thing to them as well. Learn from the games how it's done well, and learn to implement that in your game. Good luck anon.

Basically mapping Hoenn for post-kanto content in HGSS, whilst fixing the infamous level curve, and making Kanto more linear and worthwhile to play instead of the weird semi open world thing it is in HGSS. And we chose Gen 4 since there isn’t that much in terms of Gen 5 hacking yet, but we’ll probably do something in the Gen 5 engine once we’re done with this.

we’ve got a fair amount of people to replay hgss and log their levels at every gym leader/ e4 member, we’ll assess how the levelling will be when we make kanto linear, if the late game kanto gyms reach the 90s-100s we’ll probably bump the level cap up to 150 to give us breathing room to balance the hoenn gyms

Is there any reason for this? DS Emeralds sound cool, but you have to get 10s of hours in just to see it. Also wouldn't every Pokemon be in the 70s by then?
I think it's cool you want to fix up HGSS's Kanto region, but unless HGSS is also fixed(awful Kanto Pokemon all over the place instead of actually using the new Johto mons) it sound like a slog to get to the good stuff.

Because we want to, mainly. Exploring 3 regions is cool. Would be a lame ass hack if it was just “hoenn but 2.5d”. We’re changing Pokémon distribution, buffing shitmons and making johtomons actually viable, most of the development will probably go to streamlining the hack and making the journey to Hoenn actually worth playing.

I had planned on the lower area to be accessible by cutting trees, but I put a LOAD of hidden berries in that area, so a Snorlax makes sense, and tips the player off to the hidden berries.

The only idea I have for a Pokemon fangame is that after you're done with the gender selection, the one you didn't pick becomes your in-game team member for essentially an all-doubles game, and you both have a team of 6. And there'd be dungeons where you get split up and have to use both teams to navigate through it.

Been brainstorming a character arc for the Rival in a game with very little narrative. As a result I don't want to do too much with him, I just want him to have an actual character. Here's what I'm leaning towards atm.

One more recent project that I've enjoyed is Shin Pokemon Red and Blue. I didn't really like Red++ for all the changes it made so this hack is more vanilla with the changes being making all pokemon available with the versions just changing the frequency of appearance, fixing the myriad of bugs, adding some quality of life features, and some smaller extras like tweakable difficulty and some post-game content. I just like how it's a full dex hack that's kind of in between those that merely add in all the pokemon and those that alter the whole experience by backporting every new feature possible.

I'd kill for a remake of gen 2 if it had graphics like pic related, just added all the quality of life changes throughout the series, and then called it good. No OCs, no fakemon, no balance changes, nothing. Just graphic changes, a full pokedex, and some quality of life shifts.

I have a code that gives custom icons/palettes to all the pokeballs. But when any ball is thrown, it uses the palette of the pokeball. If the pokemon is caught, the ball switches to the correct palette.

And the main thing I'd want to avoid is having like... players not purposfully sack the captures of one of the trainers, because I envision after beating the Champion team, having a one-on-one with your partner. So having it built in such a way that they aren't trash would make the final showdown exciting.

But yeah, you control two trainers, all trainer battles are doubles, You swap between them with a button, potentially they get the starter you and the rival didn't pick, or they'd get their own choice.

I think doubles is a fine concept, I think triples is really fun but REALLY ambitious as an idea.

Every mon in your image (barring Heracross) is either a guaranteed encounter/gift or, in the case of Ampharaos, the path of least resistance for type coverage.
They're overused because they're convenient, and it doesn't help that they're cute.

Make guaranteed encounters and gifts less desirable than wild options, even if that changes over time.
For example: Magikarp is available very early on in Red/Blue, and is the only water type you can get for a while if you didn't pick Squirtle, but can't do shit until it evolves. Most players will pick up a more accessible water type by the time they grind Magikarp (unless they're autistic, but don't balance your game around autists), even if Gyarados is the better, if not the best, option in the long run.

Avoid giving the player a single option for a type eons before other options show up. Especially if that type is particularly desirable around the time that you'd find it.
Mareep is the only electric type you can get for quite a while in Johto, and HGSS lets you have it immediately before a flying gym. Don't do that.

You can only do so much, the GSC palette combined with the more elaborate tiles of FRLG seems a good fit for the mock style.

I just recolored some things to match the palette, anything that doesn't look gen 2 is just a recolor to save me time. I'd rather get the hack done then sit on sprites for one room. Also a lot of the pictures I post are literally right after I do it but I tend to go back to things and make them look better if I have the time.

I usually use gp7 for making midis because it's what I'm familiar with but any midi editor works, including the ones on that page which I used for awhile.

Use MidiToASM convertor for midi files, or Muse2Pokecrystal if you're exporting as musicXML.

Well anon if you read more than the very first description in the section, you'd see that MidiEditor is >More limited than Anvil Studio, but easier to learn if you just want to edit an existing MIDI file.
I would recommend if you regularly use a program for making music in general, that you use it. It likely exports as either midi or MusicXML. Midieditor should get the job done though.

Oh, I see your confusion now. Think of the term "midi editor" like the term "image editor" or "text editor". Just because it's called an editor, doesn't mean it can't make it's own files from scratch. Very few programs of any kind can edit things it can't generate.

"Ive been getting into rom hacks recently. Ive recently started playing untitled firered romhack, and its cool to see pokemon from later games in the series show up. working on a map for a romhack I wanna make.

the pink squares are locked until you complete some event at the corresponding key color inside. The purple one requires 4, the rest just 1.

Arrows are ferries/trains or other fast travel methods, all are one-way.

Green is the starting town and red is the league.

Anyways, I can't really tell much about how much the region "works" from the image, because I don't know what anything is aside from the very beginning and end. I want it to pretty open at the start, you can go anywhere except the pink ones will be locked off somehow. At the start you need to go through all 4 of the purple locations to get through the pink area with the purple 4.

Ideally the routes and trainers will level scale after each of the purple "keys" you get. I want there to be a lot of option and variation in the types of team you can build early on hence a lot of areas before there.

Then after that it gets pretty linear and I expect the played already has a final team and it's more about the challenge there.

What don't you understand about borrowing from multiple sources? I said the structure of their pantheon was Greek. Not them. The relationship between Arceus and Giratina is that of God and Lusifur.
