The Ancient Greeks however used it as a more general term for heavy infantry, Roman, Macedonian, Egyptian, Assyrian, etc were described as a phalanx by contemporary writers. Also their ability harkens back to the 300 Spartans and their whole disciplined thing is tied to the modern depiction of depicting the Spartans as modern day United States marines.
Obviously I don't expect GF to keep up with modern day scholarship on Sparta, to put it short think of the Spartans as professional rich people rather than warriors, but the glorifying of the Spartans is a bit icky to me
