One thing to note is that, ignoring the colors of their outfits, the English names fit with the starters they would pick if we're assuming they pick the type that matches their name & Red is the canon player.
Red picks Charmander, red=fire. so Blue (Gary) picks Squirtle, the stronger starter. Ideally Green (Leaf) is there as well and picks Bulbasaur the weaker starter.
But then lets say you are playing as Leaf and Gary is still your rival picking the stronger starter. In this case the Japanese names fit. Blue (Leaf) picks Squirtle, Green (Gary) picks Bulbasaur, and Red picks Charmander. So in Japan, I feel like BlueLeaf is the canon protagonist, she beats Green Oak at the pokemon league and Red fucks off as her rival in contests or something.
Also, unrelated but I wish "Green" showed up in Alola with Red & Blue so we had an adult design & outfit even though I ship Red & Blue & she would be get in the way of that
