Smogon ban lists are probably appropriate for the way they choose to play the game, but I don't play the game that way so I don't know enough to have a qualified opinion. The only issue I have with them is that sometimes novice VGC players think that Smogon rules apply to VGC as well and are robbed of the chance to use good or otherwise viable Pokémon in tournaments as a result.
