I've been playing pokemon since 1998 and I've never encountered a shiny through legal means in my life. I didn't even know shinies were a thing until I stumbled upon the info on them on the internet in like 2015. For 15 fucking years I legit thought that gyarados was one of a kind. RNG is bullshit.

You can probably find a shiny in like 5 minutes in X and Y OP. Game Freak ruined the allure and mystique of shinies by nerfing it for the average Facebook normalfg simpleton starting with Gen 6.

DP were the ones that ruined shinies by introducing "methods" in the first place. Gen 2 breeding was most likely a byproduct and not intended since it was removed by gen 3. Odds should've always stayed at a flat 1 in 8192

I put plenty of hours into XY and still zero wild shiny encounters. On the other hand, I got shiny Diancie and Armaldo through wonder trading which I'm 100% sure were hacked.

Played Pokémon X and Y back to back and got 0 shinies but did the same with Pearl and Soul Silver and got 3 full odds one: a Geodude, a Zubat and a Meowth. Chances are higher but it's no guarantee. Now... when you add up shiny charm, masuda method (Gen 5) and other shit gimmics yeah it kinda loses the point.

I forgot the method exactly but surfing near certain rocks and fishing with a Pokemon in your party with Suction Cups or some shit will get you shinies extremely easily. Although its just the same shitty shinny corphish and claunchers and etc. so its not that great but thats just one example off the top of my head where Gen 6 destroyed the monumental nature of shinies. I remember "fishing" shinies being traded around like state quarters in Wonder Trade and GTS, which tanked the value of every fish mon in that encounter area
