Regional variants were long overdue. The Unova pokedex would probably look radically different if they had used them by gen 5. The card game already had Delta Species and plenty of other monster franchises had done regional forms. I like them even if more than a handful have been lazy. I am more excited for the regional evolutions and hope we get a few new branches on existing pokemon that way.

Pokémon has the most palatable creature designs. They're just fantastical enough to not be gross looking or just a full-on human (with human skin) in a metal costume, like Digimon. Dragon Quest's designs are too "anime", which sounds weird but you can make a logical construct out of the idea of an "anime scale". Most Pokémon designs are just anime enough without going overboard.

Also Dragon Quest doesn't have nearly as much legacy outside of Japan. Most people only know DQ as "that RPG series that looks like Dragon Ball Z"

Because discussion on this board is about okemon. it's not revolutionary in the sense that no one's done it before, but in the sense that it's a new mechanic to pokemon. I'm sure people in the other fanbases felt about those gimmicks in their series like /vp/ did with pokemon, it's just that people here care much less about stuff like digimon/DC/etc.

Brand loyalty is a hell of a drug and unfortunately even though pokemon didn't do shit first, the other brands didn't penetrate consoomers with good marketing and an anime the way pokemon did... at least outside of japan. I know DQ is just as high regarded as pokemon if not more so in Japan but westerners are too stupid to divorce the art style from dragon ball Z and they just call Digimon a copycat.
