Ice should work better as a glass cannon type. Hits hard and fast with SpA or Atk but is physically weak. No more of these SLOW BULKY ice types. Throw in >>46526228 too and using ice types in that archtype could work.

That would be the most fitting for a type like ice, yes, it dies to everything but kills everything, that's the definition of a glass cannon, otherwise icemons would just be shit. Of course shit like Avalugg and Walrein are cursed to be shit forever since it wouldn't make any sense for them to be fast and frail, but we could rework some things like Articuno and even make some icemons based on animals that are fast and live in colder environments (snowy owls, puffins, loons, geese, wolves, hares, sea eagles, penguins, deer, and minks are good examples).

I'd also make it resist water, and scald be a super-effective move just like freeze-dry is. It won't make much of a difference because literally every water type runs scald, but it makes sense and might help sometimes.

Like Fighting types I can understand because they're learning a wide variety of punches, which leads into things like Fire Punch and Ice Punch. But then you've got mfing Starmie who has been able to learn Thunder since Gen 1 because Fuck You.

Only good defensive ice-type is Avalugg in the entire franchise (reliable recovery, sturdy + boots so it doesn't get crippled by hazards and compensates its low speed with stuff like Avalanche)

And now that i brought this up, it's time to segment into the big exceptions of why ice-type itself probably won't get a buff, you give an ice-type mon coverage, good offensive stats and a good ability that isn't hail reliant and that's how you get great dudes like Kyurem, G-Darm, Weavile, Mamoswine and Mega-Glalie (honorable mention goes to Froslass for being a fast spike supporter)

The only buffs the ice-typing itself should get are a resistence to Ground (this alone is enough of a defensive niche to check the likes of Landorus more reliably), mirror sandstorm's spdef for rock as phys def for ice-types and FUCKING DISTRUBUTE SLUSH RUSH TO OTHER SHIT. I mean seriously, fire-types may have sun but turns out that only grass types can get that shit and most sand rushers are ground types and ironically, Beartic is a non-water type that has Swift Swim (same goes for armaldo). I am sure that a non-ice type getting Slush Rush won't be the end of the world.

Ice needs more defensive niches. Grass is already surprisingly good, defensively. Despite it's many weaknesses, Grass resists a lot of relevant offensive typings. Ice, much less so. A single resistance to Ground would not be enough to raise defensive Ice-Types out of dogshit-tier

Give them more ice-type exclusive utility moves. Moves that are able to set up an Iron Barb and special variant while also boosting their defenses. Ice version of Life Dew that both heals you and damages the opponent. More moves like Freeze Dry that are super-effective against a specific type, like a sound-based ice move that is super-effective against fire-types with the use of thermoacoustics.

Slapping on additional resistances is dumb and usually nonsensical, it just makes other types that were kind of average even worse. Ice's lackluster defensive nature makes it unique, for better or for worse.

Fire because extreme cold can put out a fire, and Water because water can be frozen.
Ice is an offensive type, whether GF realizes it or not. Trying to buff it defensively is like putting lipstick on a pig.

Besides Ice is already amazing offensively. It needs at least two resistances so that theres a reason to use Ice types instead of Water types with Ice moves. Also do that the bulky ice types that already exist gain some use. Ground, Flying, Fairy, Water are the only types that are good enough that they can handle their STAB being resisted by another type.

I've given a lot of thought to this and it is not easy. Aurora veil was supposed to be the buff that ice needed, but it's to convoluted compared to sandstorm equals 1.5 special defense. Instead you have to use one turn to set double screens passively. So you require a weather setter and a veil setter. It's too indirect to be a buff directly to ice types and not just snow warning users. Aurora Veil is actually an awesome tech so this limits how we can improve ice. Giving ice any weather related defense boosts could either be compoundingly dangerously op when potentially stacked with Aurora veil as well as it dissincentivizes using such an interesting tech as Aurora veil. It's obvious ice needs a defensive boost but maybe not here. My hypothesis is tied to weather, what if hail boosted any offensive move either physical or special or any type of move used by an ice type to a factor of 1.2. Now let's also add that hail makes all ice moves 100% accurate. This to me seems to be a significant buff. I know it's weather contingent and most can't justify hail, but I think my bluffs make hail rather viable. Lastly we must luck at the type chart as ice does need a defensive buff but the charts are already fairly balanced and ice type is not to have too many resistances as designed by gf, so let's give ice type a resistance to flying type and call it a day? I think those changes make ice type much better.
