Just finished HGSS for the first time ever. Definitely a bit more challenging and a bit more grundy than everything I've played Gen 5 onward.

Beautiful region. So how did I do on my choices?

Typhlosion and Ampharos is generic as shit, but other than that, very based team. I never see Zatu being used in Johto (or any other region, for that matter). Heracross is always a based choice, and you clearly know you're playing a Gen 4 game, judging by the chad Mamoswine

Cool team. Bonus points for Xatu.
Just finished my Platinum run. Ursaring came in clutch against Cynthia. Her Garchomp used Dragon Rush and Ursaring survived so it could OHKO Garchomp with Avalanche.

You can use Moltres, for a less OP legendary. Moltres isn't even OU in Gen 4, so it wouldn't be that OP

I switched out Ho-oh for Arcanine once I was able to get another firestone and I’ll probably use Houndoom over Rapidash I never really liked Rapidash and I’m not keen on using and legendaries if I have to, but if I get stomped by Red repeatedly then I suppose I’ll bust out the reserves

true vanilla teams never had garchomp because they didn't backtrack to find that one cave with gible in it until after fighting cynthia at the E4, seeing the garchomp, and wondering how the fuck to get that thing.

agreed. I did a mono bug run in FRLG as a kid with the six available bug lines in those games. Was decently challenging compared to normal, but I got a newfound appreciation for compoundeyes butterfree sleeping/paralyzing everything and allowing others to come in and sweep
