Do you like the modern Gen 7-8 approach of giving every gym leader a subplot before your battle with them to give them more character?

How would you flesh out the gym leaders from the previous gens who are just kinda there at the gym waiting for you?

I think it's cool if the gym leaders are incorporated into the story. Best part of Gen 5, 7 and 8 is how gym leaders aren't just some random guys you beat once and never hear from them again. Also best part about the older games and the more memorable gym leaders are aways the ones who show up multiple times or have some sidequest or backstory attached: Blue, Claire, Blaine, Wallace, Volkner, etc

They barely had any interaction before the gym battle. If anything, gen V fleshed them out more outside the battle.

I think Gen 5 did gym leaders best. Not overbearing with the cutscene bullshit breaking up the pace of the game like gens 6+ were, but still having a bit of presence in the world to give them extra flavor rather than just being dudes who sit in a gym and nothing else.

Gen 4 and 8 did GLs best IMO. You see all of them outside of their Gyms and most of them have a relationship with another major character. I would’ve liked Gen 5 but I feel like they go beyond the point of thematic presentation when everyone keeps talking about truth, ideals, and how they love Pokémon. I like them but it felt forced.

They didn't do this though. Many of the captains in Alola just had you do a minigame or scavenger hunt in replacement of Gym trainers and puzzles. In Galar most Gym Leaders are met at the gym, or they're sitting in town at another place waiting to be spoken to before returning.

Gen 5 easily btfos all other gens in this regard. The worst of it probably being Gen 2 and 6. These assholes just sit there and expect you to know their forgettable ass names and occupations.

I don't think we need more than "just do more of what we are already doing". It would be annoying to keep stopping the plot to shove them in, and the BW moment with leaders helping against Plasma was fucking autistic and cringy, it's better to keep them as people that are characterized thru extra content and NPCs talking about them than trying to shove them at the plot
