why is he the worst trainer in any elite 4?
Is it the bad AI, is his team just trash?
I can beat him entirely with random move choices, 20 levels below him. This is the same for anybody else.

The only actual good mon he uses is Machamp, but even then you can just use any psychic or any bird and 1 hit KO it. There is no way of making Onix and the hitmons good in gen 1. He should've had Primeape and Poliwrath, these are decent.

a poliwrath as his main mon, with a single move slot dedicated to psychic to throw you off and cover his own weakness would have been great, he still remains the easiest to sweep member, the only other trainer I can compare him to is Blaine, who is also a pushover, I think they share the same bad AI package, especially noticable with Blaine, he will super potion at full health.

Fighting is a shitty type in Gen 1, SE on normals is nice but SE on rock isn't too useful. Best move is submission (and this was before it got buffed).
Bruno himself has 2 dead-weight onixes, and a hitmonchan with a shitty movepool.
All his mons have shit special and crumple to special attacks (including of course the everpresent psychic).

It's the moves, only his hitmonlee and his machamp can actually do damage, and that's only if the AI manages to roll a hi jump kick or submission, which happens 25% of the time.
I'm convinced the only way Bruno would be hard is if your lv 20

Sabrina is harder than Bruno, Agatha is harder than them both. Agatha is where I first run into trouble.

If I had to rank gen 1 elite 4 by difficultly, it would be:

Bruno
Lance
Lorelei
Agatha

It's this way in gen 1 simply due to the rarity of the moves and types, you never normally have to deal with dragons, ice and ghosts, I always seem to forget what can hit a ghost and what cannot, ice comes with freezing solid, which isnt something you deal with at all until then, dragons being weak to dragons is why Lance gets his spot.

it's the payoff for training what kids wouldnt, same with magikarp, I know for certain my snotnosed cousins would refuse to catch/train anything that wasnt already strong, fuck even the concept of switch training didnt occur to them yet, we are talking gen 1, they simply didnt know you could switch them out and share exp, so having 2 mons with no attacking moves meant the kids walked past them, the rest of us wondered what secrets they held and were rewarded with a kadabra and gyarados, both of which are so strong in their respective fields they can carry you solo, with no issues
