I like Electric Tale of Pikachu but it does kinda require you to be familiar with the anime up to the Orange Islands, even though it's clearly an alternate take on the anime. It's really cool and was drawn in an era before pokemon became sanitized so the pokemon look like legit monsters and there's some nice fan service too.
Just don't hope to find physical copies for a reasonable price since rocket shippers drove up the price of the final volume.
Published as 12 single floppy comic books, collected in 4 graphic novels, for some reason they changed the title of the series in every volume.
