What possessed GameFreak to nerf this poor thing in Generation 2? Poor Tangela wasn't even all that good in Generation 1. and the sheer extent they reduced its special defense seems inexplicable. Actually good pokemon didn't get their balls cut off that badly!

As a person with Tangela as his favorite Pokemon since gen I i feel this pain, too. My little one did not deserved this or turning into a fucking disgusting abomination that is Tangrowth.

also, it's not going to overshadow a starter, those things were inherently super-popular, especially early on.

How did Tangela measure up amongst other grass types in Red/Blue/Yellow? Was it the worst of the fully evolved ones?
I know it was the only pure-grass type, so I guess it at least didn't take extra damage from psychics or ground attacks

I think the consensus is that it would have been OU if it got razor leaf in gen 1, due to the crit mechanics. I'm surprised they knocked down its spdef so much in gen 2, though. never knew it was that severe

Not that guy and I don't particularly care about either, but I can see how Tangrowth ruins the appeal.
Tangela's vines are all fully detailed while Tangrowth's vines form a shapeless blue blob with a few token vines sticking out. It's a much lazier design.

best post. tangrowth is a great evolution for tangela, I love the arms, but the lack of detail is extremely annoying. the feet are annoying too bc they don't match.
Tangrowth is far better than the beta GS evolution & pre evo, since those ruin the idea of not knowing what's under the vines.

This is your answer for the record OP.
If they didn't gut its Sp.Def it would have been abnormally strong for a middle stage Pokémon. Chances are they didn't care enough to set it right after cutting the rest of em.

And maybe it always had two eyes and a mouth, but you can't see through the the vines, maybe there's even more secrets. The beta line give you more answers but algo give more questions.

technically they didn't reduce it's sp. def because it was before special was split up. after they separated it into spdef/spatk it would've been pretty OP

yeah, but what I mean is when they split special into 2 stats they used the opportunity to nerf some Pokémon(like Mewtwo and Alakazam et al), while buffing others(the Hitmons, the non-Venusaur starters etc) but in the case of Tangela, they knackered a Pokemon that was never that good.

I can't see how Tangela could've been anywhere near overpowered, It had good Defense and Special stats, but that was it, it learned bugger-all different types of attacks.
And even if they did decide to make one stat low in the split, they didn't have to make it THAT low

Unless I'm missing something, everything that would have justified Tangela' special defense cut was fixed in GSC anyway. Bind no longer prevents attacks and he cannot boost both special stats with one attack. Then they let you breed amnesia on to it to terrify RBY tradebacks.

Anyway, I've saved other pictures of the same character with alternate names, but I don't think that goes back as far as what you're talking about.

To be honest, I couldn't remember if the smoking Mary image was something I cropped myself or saved from someone else's post, but the way you've brought it up, I'm pretty sure I just downloaded it
