Retro is not about age, it's an aesthetic.
Nothing past the fifth gen can be retro. Although I guess the line is blurrier for handhelds.

retro is gens 1 and 2. modern is anything gen 3 and newer because the games havent made any meaningful progress since, and the small bits of progress were all dismissed as gimmicks

Gen 2 was a big departure from gen 1. Gen 3 was likewise a big departure from gen 2 with the new stat system and natures. Since then, the new games have more or less been stuck in gen 3. The phys/spec split was definitely notable, but everything still feels stagnant since gen 3.

This is why I personally think Gen 4 and 5 look so ugly. Terrible 3D models on 2D overworld look awful. If they went full sprite they would have been good.

It's a shame too because they got great pokemon sprites. The battle backgrounds are the worst thought. They just smeared shit for no reason. I get people liking the gameplay but the gen 4 games look awful.
