That seems to be the current design philosophy though. While in gens 1-4 you could argue they were pulling inspiration from all over the world despite being based on Japanese regions, from Gen 5 onwards it's clear Gamefreak has been basing their regions more and more 1:1 to the real life equivalent. In terms of Pokémon designs, this became really apparent in Gen 8, where like 70% of the new designs tie in to British culture somehow.

how would that work with shinies? if you evolve a shiny shellder and a regular slowpoke into a slowbro does it have only half of a star in the summary screen?

And the rest are common animals like dog, sheep, birds and so on. Most of the new lines in Swish are directly British inspired. The only possible exceptions are Dragapult based on an American plane, grapploct, another luchador, and eiscue, a penguin. The rest of the dex fits thematically within British culture, which is a luxury none of the other regions got for their new dexes.
