The fact that he for some reason is the only human that can talk to pokemon was not necessary. But the shadow triad as a whole was completely ridiculous; that group did not add anything to the story whatsoever and just felt like we had to accept these random idiots with superpowers.

Him seeing you with pokemon that look happy with you would have had the same effect. If they fleshed out the talking bit more and brought it up again later I might think differently about it, but it's only used in one scene in order to initiate a battle, so I don't think creating a new canon human superpower is necessary just for that.
