As far as the Champion not being helped by a little kid, there are a thousand ways to resolve that and GF chose the laziest one. Again, this was a non-issue solved as early as GS: Lance didn't help you at Slowpoke Well, for instance, presumably because he didn't know about it or it was under his radar.
It is, after all, unrealistic for the Champion to respond to every single minor criminal plot.
