>>46547986The linearity in RBY is nothing more than an illusion, the illusion of choice. In reality, it's more like choosing branching paths in order to reach a common goal. While, yes, you can choose the order of which you do things, you still have to do them. You can't decide whether you want to or not do the S.S Anne, but you can decide when to do it. You can do it before or after you defeat Misty, or Surge. RBY offers very little beyond these choices, making the world feel very scripted and forces you to play how the developers intended instead of playing how you want to. Pair this up with the fact that a fair amount of trainers use poison types, forcing you to buy antidotes or use Psychic types, the fact that there is basically nothing to do but catch Pokemon post-game, and certain roadblocks and you will find that the developers wanted you to go throughout your story the way they wanted to. And this would be fine, if the games actually offered something else other than doing gyms and catching Pokemon. Maybe more minigames. Sidequests. Alternative storylines. Dungeons. However, RBY offers very little of these, making the games play the same with the small differences such as choosing how/where you want to go/ what gym you want to do, and which Pokemon you want to catch.
