His problem is that he needs Blastoise to deal with Talonflame and Garchoimp, but he can't really take out Magnezone because it beats his only fire type, unless Snorlax gets EQ, but I don't think any Red team does that.

Red had Bulbasaur as his starter more times that he had Charmander.
FYI, his original name was Satoshi, but they renamed him to Red for international marketing so his name had nothing to do with Charizard

Almost every media in Gen1 showed Red with Bulbasaur (except only 1 artwork and 1 manga)
that is:
Promotional artworks for Red and Green

Which is why Red have Venusaur in LGPE since it's part of Gen1.
ever since Gen6, TPC tries too hard to retcon that to have Red with Charizard instead (Origins and Masters)
