Midwits complained about too much water in hoenn, it gave the region identity, if they had better pokemon variety and more optional dive spots on those routes it would've been perfect and I doubt people would've complained as much

I think it was for the best. The engine just doesn't render water that great. The few water areas that are in the game are pretty disappointing. I think they knew not to push the engine and that people would complain about long water routes. The engine looks best on land and towns.

The problem was never too water, it was too much water that looked the same and had the same three mons in it. The water routes just needed more variety.

This. The water routes themselves were perfectly fine, but the encounter tables with nothing but tentacool, wingull, and pelipper (sans that one route with a ONE PERCENT chance of wailord) got so incredibly stale. If they added a handful of more side locations and expanded the encounter tables, the water routes would have been kino.
ORAS did honestly improve this by adding those hidden coves, introducing rare non-hoenn encounters, and adding some easter egg surfers (wailmer, sharpedo, and kyogre), but ultimately didn't do enough to make each route unique.

No. People were complaining about water in Hoenn from the day the games came out. When IGN actually brought that shit up in a review some people got mad it was actually acknowledged outside of the fandom.

Kalos was the last real region
>last one with HMs
>last one with a water route
>last one where your rival chooses the starter super effective against yours
>last one with moderately sized non-hallway dungeons
>last one that added onto the series instead of subtracting from it (it didn't remove anything from gen 5 like triple/rotation battles)
>last one with an actual national dex
>last one with traditional gyms and an elite four
Say what you want about XY, but all it needed was a Z version to bring it up to par with Emerald/Plat/B2W2. Alola and Galar feel like bad spinoff games
