Is this the best game to start with for someone like myself who's literally never played any Pokemon game before? I bought pokemon sword but you all said its not the best place to start.

My toaster runs gba emulator pretty well so I'm thinking either this or emerald is the best place to start. Or should I just play sword/shield instead?

Play heartgold soulsilver, it is packed with content, and it's what I grew up with. The gen 2 remakes are wonderful because you are familiar with something other than kantomons, and there is a massive postgame. Get a DS emulator.

For emulation, MelonDS or Drastic should suit your needs.

But if you prefer to use an actual DS, a R4 card or similaf device is cheap. But beware of Time Bombed carts or learn how to install YSMenu

RBY didn't held up pretty well over time. Even if someone wanted to play GSC over the remakes, I think there wouldn't be any problems with going FRLG -> GSC.

problem with playing remakes of red or blue as your first game is that you won't really notice the changes made to the series with the follow ups. you might get bored or burned out. if you want the full experience play yellow, crystal then emerald.

Play FRLG then HGSS or BW then BW2. Either way you start with a smaller dex and then learn more with a direct sequel. Personally I prefer BW1/2 but most of the board has nostalgia for HGSS and will tell you they're the best games despite all if the obvious flaws.

That said I really enjoyed FRLG, although they still suffer a bit from problems carried over from the originals, like routes being extremely small and bland due to original gameboy hardware limitations

Really depends on if you want a casual experience. SwSH is by far the easiest game in the series but not much of the charm of older games. I'd probably recommend Platinum or Emerald. They're not as brain dead as SwSh and have a lot of charm to em. It's also pretty damn easy to pirate both games and my shit laptop can run em ok.

Yeah, it was my first pokemon game way back in the day. I would recommend playing a hacked version with the physical/special split. It isnt 'authentic' to the original, but FireRed isnt authentic to Red anyway. Itll make the transition to future games easier

The split makes games too easy and I always end up with one overpowered Pokemon in my team. I like the games before the split because Pokémon had worse movesets so with a fee exceptions you couldn't rely on one pokemon.

Whatever you do, just be sure to play Gen 4 and 5, since they were the golden age of the franchise (more specifically Gen 4, but B2W2 is top 3 alongside Pt and HGSS).

FRLG has Oak's tutorial dialogue an optional tutorial TV you can watch anytime and a help menu. You probably won't need to use them, but it's obvious that GameFreak intended it to be an entry level game.

After that play HGSS because it's the sequel to FRLG. Then Emerald, Platinum and whatever other games you wish.

Play FRLG first to sort of ground you in the franchise, then you have a choice between whatever gen 4+ game you want or trying Emerald if you feel like you have an interest in some of the Battle Frontier factilities post-game or really like the spritework on the GBA. I liked Gen 3 Hoenn a lot more than Gen 6's Hoenn, fwiw, so if FRLG is good to you definitely play Hoenn on GBA as they feel largely the same.
You can revisit Hoenn with OR/AS later if you're sick of the GBA and want to continue with what has been added since then in largely any order you want; going backwards from Gen 6 and later might fuck with you since they added Fairy typing to a handful of oldmons and removed two resistances from Steel.
Note that Platinum/HGSS have different Battle Frontier facilities from Emerald, and that the jump from Gen 3 -> Gen 4 is one of the bigger ones since in Gen 1-3 attacks have the physical or special attribute attached to types, while in Gen 4 and on attacks have the physical/special stats based on the move rather than the type of attack.

/vp/ will hate you for it but you can completely skip Gen 5 altogether and you won't miss out on anything.

Definitely play FireRed first then try HgSs. You'd probably enjoy playing the definitive games of each gen in order if you're really brand new to the series, so Emerald, Platinum, BW, B2W2 in that order. Gen 6 onwards falls flat but still worth playing if you enjoy the rest of the games.

I played them for the first time a year or so ago and they were almost perfectly playable. The only thing that was outdated was the storage box. Again play the game. My nephew doesn't know how to read and he plays it just fine.

FRLG are some of my favorites but while I don't agree with >>46577376 the originals do look and sound better. Not technically of course but subjectively the sprites in gen 1 and 2 are works of art. Every generation pokemon get better and better movesets and this makes the game so much easier. It's nice going back and trying to make shitmons work. It's fantastic. Again there is no reason for you not to try the originals. I'm not saying they are better but I think they are both great. Give it a try.

I have given it a try, I’ve even played yellow and blue kaizo. R/B/Y just don’t hold up as well. Unlike G/S/C where you have a reason to play them instead of HG/SS, there little reason to go back to gen 1 instead of FireRed. The only reason is for gimmicks and nostalgia. Keep it mind, it’s Pokémon. It’s not a bad game. It’s just a more dated product. I like gen 3 without the physical special split but I acknowledge that going forward it was best to remove these because my personal feelings aren’t reflective of the average person

There are lots of reasons to play RB over FRLG, graphics, sounds, and sprites. You have to understand that FRLG was never meant as a replacement for RB. It was a new simplified game for a new generation. I didn't get the Lavender Town creepy music meme until I played RB. It sounds so much better than FRLG. I also hated the ugly sprites in the original until I played it and it's such a different beast and no other game has been able to match it. Least of all not FRLG that continued the standardization of Pokemon designs so you would never have interesting and unique pokemon sprites or models ever again.

I have 6 nieces and nephews. They all want to snatch my gameboy out of my hand and play. I usually let the olders play. At work I took my gameboy one day and my male coworkers were like "omg, that still works? I remember that." and I didn't even play it. They just knew the original game. Everyone loves the originals bro. Remember:

That is optional and far from necessary or wanted for a first playthrought. That comes much later and he can easily trade when he gets there.

If you enjoy the Pokemon formula (catching, battling, grinding, linear story), then you will more or less enjoy every Pokemon game. Don't listen to people talking about the physical/special split, or glitchy older games. You will not notice either those things in a casual playthrough.

If you want a semi-modern game that still gives you a sense for where the series started from, then Fire Red/Leaf Green is a good choice. If you like retro games and don't mind outdated graphics, then start with the Original Red/Blue. They're worth playing just out of curiosity, to experience the origin of Pokemon.

Black/White and their sequels were the last Pokemon games that I really enjoyed. Everything after them is shit.

I haven't played Sword/Shield, but they seem alright, especially for someone new to the series. I think you will enjoy them. It's cool to see Pokemon in 3D, plus the gameplay is more streamlined and convenient.

Anyways, FireRed followed by Sword/Shield sounds good to me. Most newcomers don't find Pokemon games very fun, it's kind of something you had to grow up with. If you do get hooked, then I recommend playing Emerald, that's my favorite one.

As for not playing Sword first, it adds a lot of convivences that is only in that game. That and natural QoL additions as a series progresses, so if you try to go lower it might feel weird unless you grew up with it.

Every game is fun in their own right. I don't get some of the people on this board, but maybe I'm just an easy man to please. I have my favorites, but I still enjoyed the ones I played. As long as you enjoy the game for what it is and trying to do, you'll like it. If you can't seem to enjoy Pokemon, I wouldn't force it. I don't do this with any game. I either enjoy it or don't. They all have their flaws, but they all have their own charm too. As well as gimmicks. I would only suggest starting with the latest in a long series due to qol.
You also reminded me that I think I locked myself out of the E4 from using an Action Replay after I had already burned out of other content and wanted event legendaries.

OP here. I've been playing FireRed all day, its pretty fun.

However I just found out that Let's Go Pikachu is an even newer remake of the first gen, and since I have a Nintendo Switch, is Let's Go Pikachu in fact a better starting point.

The Let's Go games are a bit different from other mainline games. For one, you can only catch wild Pokemon. You don't battle them. I think you still get exp from doing it, but I feel like it takes away a bit from learning how to battle and catch Pokemon in the other games. It was also made to be a lot easier. Masuda's idea, Game Freak director, is that there's way too many games out there compared to when the original games released. So to keep the target audience's attention, they have to make it easier so they're willing to beat it. It has it's own charm, but I'd probably wait on it for a bit if I wear you.
Keep with FR. It's nice to experience a game from a different time sometimes. Maybe after you've played a few others you can go back to the Gameboy ones and see how they feel.
