Maybe neither are that bad. Doesn't seem to be much of an emphasis on family in the Pokemon world culture, and kids seem to be able to leave home very early. This implies they are able to be self-sufficient at a younger age than real humans, so if a parent is bad by our standards, it might just be like one of your friends turning out to be a huge jerk instead of some traumatic childhood event.
Ghetsis is probably worse though bc the kid calls himself N and chooses to have that weird hairstyle. Something is surely wrong there.
