Not really.
If Pokeballs can catch Pokemon, why wouldn't they also be able to catch items?
It makes sense to use whatever pocket dimension tech Pokeballs have to hold more items.
And items in Pokeballs are probably the result of trainers dropping their storage balls.

Give me one thing from the games that disprove the theory.
The fact that the mimic mons actually represents Pokéballs and not random items should be enough to prove that it holds some water.

As for other branches like the anime has straight up shown that items can be stored in Pokéballs.

The Gen 7 games even state that regular Poke Balls don't work welll on Ultra Beasts because they have difficulty recognizing them as Pokemon. You need special Poke Balls that do recognize them as Pokemon (Beast Balls) to have a good chance of catching them.

Also, it's an example from the Gen 1 anime, which had a lot of weird or made up shit in it because Pokemon had no lore back then, and a lot of stuff from the first season has been retconned

Items appearing in balls is a holdover from Capsule Monsters, which essentially revolved around monsters and objects being stored inside Dragon Ball capsules with a different look. Well, that, and what >>46583462 said - they're just meant to represent any item.
Poké Balls have never been shown to hold anything but Pokémon in any official Pokémon media, so the chests mentioned in >>46582802 make more sense.
