Also very linear, and most of the exploration stuff is at the endgame, but it's a fucking roller-coaster. Maybe you don't like theme parks though, video games can be like that sometimes. I know the developers of the Sly games once compared video games to theater, like, plays and shit, not the movie kind. There's a lot of different ways to make something feel open. People still like Kanto, even if it's mostly linear, and most options don't really matter, because it feels expansive. I personally like Unova and Hoenn, as far as map design goes, fits that nice niche between open and linear that I crave. Xenoblade 2 hits that feeling the most. On the other hand, the only open world game I really like is The Legend of Zelda. On the NES. Xenoblade X and BotW have a few problems. What kind of map design are you looking for. You have played games other than Pokemon, right?
