The cartridges ARE the collectibles, along with the memorabilia that's attached to them. The utmost important thing for collectors is the state of the things overall. Sure, millions of cartridges are out, but in what condition? How many of those STILL have the pokewalker? How many of those still have THE FULL MANUAL? How many of those are, say, sealed and/or unopened? And the list of available shortens much more
Why? Because there's a finite amount of these, and Nintendo isn't keen to reprint old shit that easy. If anything, just like Earthbound, these will get more expensive the rarer they become in the market mint.
Granted, if they release them on VC for everyone to download, that'll lower the price exponentially (like it happened with EB), but those who are behing having physical shit for their collection, will still pay 3-4 digit amounts for those; either that, or they price would ramp up again because of said scarcity, even if available digital.
