Bulbasaur and Squirtle falter later on in some areas but by then (especially in Bulbasaur's case because it only starts to be in an unfavorable situation to a gym at the sixth one while squirtle gets thunderfucked by Surge and then Erika and already slows at Misty) one will naturally have more mons and a proper team to counter such faults. The only thing I can think of that the Charmander line is good for is burning some bugs at the beginning of the game that were never a threat in the first place.
