It didn't revolutionize anything like those games revolutionized 3D. But it has the same position in the Pokémon fanbase as SM64 and OoT do in the Mario and Zelda fanbases, as the overall favorite entry in the series.

Gold and silver are not bad but they are overrated. They easily sit in the middle tier rather than the tippy top.

To say that these games are the best, would show you how underdeveloped this series is. GSC/HGSS, while arguably the least flawed games in the series, is held together by a bunch of QOL. Johto, as a region, is nothing without Kanto. Kanto has been overdone to death. The reason we like GSC/HGSS, is because of the amount of stuff you can do in it. For example, I'm 20 hours in right now and I haven't even beat Team Rocket. The problem is with these games, is that with the amount of stuff they add it also takes away a bit. For example, the level curve is pretty bad. I've been switching out Pokemon I don't like before Pryce, and I have found that 4/6 of my team is underleveled. Another thing is the small region: Johto feels very small, and this isn't helped by the fact that you have to visit nearly every place in the story. I could go on and on, but these games, while they might be the framework for the "ideal" Pokemon game, have alot left to be desired. Even HGSS aren't necessarily good games, as they don't fix any of the issues that the originals had and are carried by QOL changes. Still, Johto will forever be better than the overrated trainwreck that is Sinnoh.

No, the point is that HGSS wins, not GSC. The only poll in which gen 2 wins in on fucking reddit, 8 years ago, and by 1%. HGSS isn't GSC, if you had actually played them both you'd know.

HGSS is only gen 2 if you ignore the added content, 200+ pokemon, abilities, natures, different way evs work, compatibility with gen 4 but not gen 2, physical/special split, graphics and aesthetics that are gen 4, QoL improvements that are of gen 4, etc. that don't exist and could not exist in gen 2.
A fuckton of people who played HGSS didn't even play the originals and vice versa, which makes sense because they're a decade apart. You might as well claim everyone who likes Kanto places RBY, FRLG, and LGPE in the same place when it comes to their favorite games.

Honestly Wind Waker with it's control and how it plays is very fluid alongside it's new mechanics. It was run on an extremely tight schedule though and rushed so a lot of aspects of it were cut or reduced which hurt it bad. I wish the remake was more a "hey here's what we REALLY wanted to do" rather then a "graphic update and QoL changes".
