Gen 3 is the most interesting gen for competitive.
>good variety of mons
>no blatantly overpowered abilities
>clear divide between uber and OU
>no entry hazard or weather dominance
>lack of split results in a lot more mixed attackers with off-kilter movesets
>b-but muh Sneasel!
not even in the lowest tier, it actually does pretty decent in UU

Gen 1 is the most interesting because it's a complete trainwreck and nearly every strategy revolves around cheese strats GF never intended because they didn't think Pokemon would get nearly as popular as it did, or the nifty little link battle feature would be taken so seriously that it would be relentlessly picked apart for 25 years.

Fighting types are still shit if you remove the psychics, their best move submission and is weak and deal recoil, they often kill themselves without dealing much damage.

It's still top heavy with a handful of pokemon having really high usage. Probably not the worst but could use more variety.

Other than Sand Stream I would agree.

Uber should have just been legendaries regardless of how good they are. Banning OU pokemon is dumb.

True for entry hazards but Tyranitar is pretty dominant with its weather.

The split was the biggest power creep in the entire game and it broke way too many things.

Sneasel got worse after the split. Only an evolution could keep up with the power of the split.

I'm don't play competitive but if I did I would probably play gen 3. It's not as varied as I think competitive should be but the meta is pretty interesting.

The power creep had more to with a fuckton of evolutions, legendaries, and Garchomp. Also Lame Freak playing favorites with which mons get to have coverage. That’s not even getting into Stealth Rocks.

Fighting being just a counterpick to revenge kill Normals is fine. The reason they're unusable in Gen 1 comp isn't because they can't sweep, its because they're setup bait for Amnesia Psychic types. By removing Kazam and Mewtwo you make it so that the exact same interplay exists but Fighting doesn't invite in setup sweepers that are also unbreakable walls - Slowbro, Exeggutor, Jynx have other exploitable weaknesses and can't setup nearly as freely as pure Psychics. Hypno isn't even a sweeper.

Gengar isn't nearly strong enough to be the all-in-one machine Kazam and Mewtwo are since it's weak to EQs and doesn't do shit to Exeggutor or Jynx, the other two premier Psychic types. Remember, gen 1 Ghost typing advantage is busted and it only has Lick and Night Slash(?) as STABs.
Still has a solid matchup against Slowbro with T-bolt and eats up other low-tiers with Psychic coverage like Golduck
