This doesn't work for pokemon anyway. It's funny for mario because you can't just slap mario onto a different engine, the hyper-realistic backgrounds make it a punchline. Mario has evolved to a point where it has it's own style and the games break new ground with that style. Pokemon is seen as lazy, with animations, and graphics still just slightly above stock assets. There's no aesthetic to Pokemon for a Pokemon modder to ignore.
