The sad part is that I like a lot of their designs. It's just that they were destined for irrelevance due to problems like terrible stats or distribution that pretty much guaranteed you'd never be using one.

Also side note, I always forget that Lanturn is a gen 2 pokemon. For whatever reason I always associate that one with Hoenn more.

Just looking at that image is super comfy. Some of them only being available at certain times because of the day/night cycle that was introduced made the routes feel extra special. It gave you a reason to return to old routes at night because you didn't know what nocturnal Pokemon you might run into.

I know a guy who is probably one of the toughest and all around bad ass people I've ever met, served in the military and what not. I showed him a Sunkern I caught in pokemon Go and he was like "I dig that fuckers style anon" and I've always thought that was the funniest things ever so I like Sunkern because of this.

Most of these pokemon have an explicit niche they are designed to fill which makes finding them in their home regions and learning their tool sets interesting and rewarding.

Skarmory was pretty out of the way in Johto, whereas you have to go through the ash route to progress the story in Hoenn. Same deal with Slugma

I always see this gen's pokemon as being aggressively bland, which honestly a lot of them are, but it actually has a lot of personal favourites. Very conflicting looking at this.

Cyndaquil, Totodile, Xatu, Sudowoodo, Quagsire, Murkrow, Slowking, Misdreavus, Gligar, Steelix, Scizor, Heracross, Sneasel, Magcargo, Skarmory, Houndoom, Donphan, Tyranitar, love these fuckers.

Johto gave me so many of my favs: Feraligatr, Kingdra, Crobat, Espeon, and first forms of some my fav Sinnoh evolutions like Togekiss and Gliscor. Even playing SS I’d get most excited when a gen 2 poke appeared

Time-based encounters were one of the most soulful additions. It added the the immersion and helped give each pokemon on a route more of an identity. It also helps with balancing encounter pools (if a route has 8 Pokémon its better to have 4 in the day and 4 at night rather than have them appearance at once).

A lot of Gen II Pokemon I really like design wise even if they're complete shit in battle, Crobat is a consistently useful Pokemon and whenever it turns up throughout the series I have a habit of using it even over Regional Birds. Recently replayed Crystal with Jumpluff and was actually pretty alright at doing what I needed it to, although man it makes me really miss not having Acrobatics.

It's a shame that in the Johto Games a lot of them are incredibly annoying to get or just outright post-game (including my favourite, Houndoom) but at least later generations have given them more reasonable presence. the Togepi line and Houndoom in Platinum and Azumarill in XY have been some MVPs for those playthroughs, also Espeon just in general is useful and probably my most used Eeveelution.

Funnily enough I had the same thing with Medicham when I was younger since I skipped Gen III initially and due to Meditite's prevalence in Sinnoh I just figured it was one of the Pokemon introduced in that gen.

To this day I don't know what they were thinking with this. Especially Houndoom, since you can acquire Growlithe early anyway so it would have been an easy and mostly inconsequential swap.

That and far too many of them are single-stage pokemon with no evolutions. Half the fun of pokemon games is catching some new creature and then training it until it eventually evolves into something else. It's not as satisfying when it stays exactly the same the entire way through.
